Eurovision Song Contest 2011

"It's brilliant from start to finish and presented in a cheeky yet masterful way in three languages."
This is what the television award judges had to say of the team's achievement at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. Anke Engelke, Judith Rakers and Stefan Raab received awards for hosting the event and ARD Head of Entertainment Thomas Schreiber, BRAINPOOL's Managing Director Jörg Grabosch, stage designer Florian Wieder and lighting designer Jerry Appelwere also received awards for their contributions.
After Lena's victory on May 29th, 2010 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, the international music contest formerly referred to as "Grand Prix" once again came to Germany for the first time since 1983. The final round of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday the 14th of May in Düsseldorf met with enthusiastic support in Germany and around the world. The show was broadcast live in over 50 countries, and ARD's market share was just under 50 per cent.

Top-notch performers provided entertainment as Europe cast its ballots. Jan Delay with his band Disko No. 1, the Cold Steel Drummers and the Flying Steps were the show acts at the finals and the semi-finals of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf.

ESC basics:

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is an international music contest comprising composers and song writers that has been featured since 1956 yearly by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) within the framework of Eurovision. Since the 1957 Eurovision Song Contest, broadcasters from each country that participates have sent a song to the Eurovision Song Contest.
The international contest takes places regularly in the country of the previous year's winner. A semi-final and final rounds have been broadcast since 2004 . The final round takes place in two parts: In first two-hour part, the finalists present themselves and, in the one-hour second part, the participants from the individual countries receive their scores. The transition of approximately 10 to 15 minutes includes a show programme.
The most successful participant country is Ireland with seven wins and, in the years 1992 to 1994, they actually had 3 in succession . The most successful participant also comes from Ireland. Johnny Logan won two times as a singer (in 1980 with What’s Another Year and in 1987 with Hold Me Now) and once as a composer (in 1992: Why Me).

Over the years, the Eurovision Song Contest has made several performers into international stars, who had been virtually unknown prior to their performance.
This is particularly true of the Swedish pop group ABBA who won the contest with the song Waterloo. The quebecoise singer Céline Dion also became known through her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988, representing Switzerland and winning with Ne partez pas sans moi. The Belgian Lara Fabian (who later made it to the charts with I will love again) took her first international step at ESC for Luxembourg and finally the Polish womanEdyta Górniak. The Irish folklore group Riverdance also made it to fame by performing as extras at the ESC. The flash mob of the song Glow across all of Europe helped the band Madcon make their breakthrough at the Eurovision Song Contest during the voting phase.
