March 8, 1999, 10:15 p.m.: the birth of "TV total" with host Stefan Raab. For more than eight years now, "TV total" has been one of the most popular shows on German television. Since February 2001, ProSieben has been broadcasting "TV total" four times a week: from Monday to Thursday at 10:15 p.m.
In "TV-Total", Stefan Raab presents the most bizarre highlights from current television programming and, every day, invites interesting guests over for witty chats and the most spectacular events.
Many celebrities from Germany and abroad have had a seat on Stefan’s couch: Tennis star Boris Becker, action hero Jackie Chan, heart-throb Til Schweiger, "Sex and the City" star Kim Cattrall, comedian Dieter Hallervorden, mega producer Bernd Eichinger, legendary tennis star John McEnroe, bicycling athlete Erik Zabel, comedy queen Anke Engelke, the boxing brothers Wladimir & Vitali Klitschko, Formula 1 shooting star Nick Heidfeld, popstars like Elton John and Kylie Minogue, singer Nena, boxing legend George Foreman, comedy talent Axel Stein, actor Oliver Korittke, practicing Buddhist and silver screen actor Armin Rohde, the incomparable Helge Schneider, Dallas bad guy Larry Hagmann, comedy veteran Rudi Carrell, US acting star Ben Stiller and many more.
However, Stefan has proven that he got more than a good head above his shoulders, he is quite agile on his feet as well: his stunts on "Raab in Gefahr" (Raab in danger), which in the meantime has reached cult status are unsurpassable. He proves again and again that no risk is too dangerous for his audience, such as when he performed as a stunt pilot. In his wrestling match with the German national wrestling team, the (un)beatable TV host showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in the arena, despite having sporting scratches – a fact that was amply rewarded by the audience. Nowadays, Elton is following in his boss's footsteps more often. In "Elton in Raabs Gefahr" ("Elton Faces Raab's Dangers"), he proves that even he can survive a day of stunt classes or one spent with survival guru Rüdiger Nehberg.
Needless to say, a music multi-talent needs his own show band: The "Heavytones" are not only available to the master himself, but also – it goes without saying – to the "TV total" guests – those who are musicians, those who are supposed to be, but also those who would desperately like to be and cannot be prevented from performing!
Many a star has performed on "TV total", including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deep Purple, Lenny Kravitz, Pink, Ricky Martin, Elton John, Pussy Cat Dolls, Simple Minds, Anastasia, Coldplay, Lionel Richie, Alanis Morissette, Shakira, Kylie Minogue, Ronan Keating, the "Godfather of Soul" James Brown, Bon Jovi, Die toten Hosen, sex symbol Robbie Williams and U2.
Millions of viewers have been following TV total’s sensational events where Stefan Raab puts German celebrities to the ultimate test: thundering down the bobsled track in the "International Wok World Cup"; somersaulting off a five-metre springboard ("The Incredible TV total Springboard Event"); rolling head-over-heels in stock-car racing ("The Incredible TV Total Stock Car Crash Challenge") or clearing all the fences in the show jumping arena ("The Incredible TV Total Show Jumping Championship" ). In December 2006, 16 celebrities competed in "Der große TV total Parallelslalom" ("The Great TV total Slalom Race") in St. Anton. Stefan Raab himself broke his nose after taking on female boxing world champion Regina Halmich in 2001, challenged Olympic speed skating champion Claudia Pechstein to a race and won in 2002. 2007 marked the revival of the "Killerplauze" ("killer gut"). Stefan Raab faced Regina Halmich in the ring once again during "McFit Fight Night" at Kölnarena before 19,500 spectators.
In 2005 Eurovision Song Contest veteran Raab established the first German national song contest, the "Bundesvision Song Contest", which now takes place every year. With "Stefan Seeks the Super Grand Prix Star – SSDSGPS" Stefan Raab managed more than just the perfect send-up of the Deutschland Sucht Den Superstar show – DSDS – providing also an extraordinary vehicle for showcasing Germany’s hottest talent. The winner was Max Mutze, who went on to represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul in the same year.The deserved reward was the Grimme Preis Spezial (Special Grimme Award) 2005. With "Stefan Sucht Den Superstars, Der Singen Soll, Was Er Möchte Und Gerne Auch Bei RTL Auftreten Darf" (Stefan Seeks Superstar, Who Sing What They What And Love To Appear On RTL), Stefan has again been looking for talent in Germany in 2007/2008. The winner of the competition's finale was the 18-year-old Stefanie Heinzman from Switzerland, who entered right away the German Charts with her hit single "My Man Is A Mean Man".
Particular ideas and events require the particular TV total touch: for the "TV total Jazz Night – an Evening with Style", Stefan invited guests to experience a musical and comedy show with a difference. Together with Helge Schneider, Tom Gäbel, Max Mutze and the Heavytones Big Band, Raab performed his version of evergreen ditties by the greatest American singers, and German songs like "Über den Wolken" as well as jazz standards such as "Fly me to the moon". The TV total Dance Week saw Stefan Raab swinging with the professionals, and the parliamentary elections 2005 and 2009 were not left unscathed either. In a special edition of TV total, German viewers had the opportunity to take part in a phone-in vote the day before the actual election to predict which party would win the most seats. And the TV total vote clearly mirrored the actual results of the following day. The deserved reward 2005: The journalist award "Goldener Prometheus" in the special category "Coup of the year".
The entertainment show "TV Total" was awarded, among others, with the German television prize for best entertainment program. In April 2001, the show was awarded a further special recognition: at the ceremony of the "Golden Rose of Montreux", the most renowned television prize in Europe, "TV total" received the "Bronze Rose" in the category "Variety". In 2004 then a further great award for Stefan Raab and "TV total": the presenter has received the "Goldene Kamera" (Golden Camera) in the "TV Entertainer" category for his ProSieben show.
Since September 2006, Stefan Raab has also starred in the Saturday night hit show "Schlag den Raab" ("Beat Raab"), which was awarded the Deutscher Fernsehpreis 2007 (German Television Award).
