TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge

The “TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge” – a further superlative event à la Stefan Raab.

So far, celebrity stock car drivers have met up at the VELTINS Arena in Gelsenkirchen three times (2005/2006/2007). Anything and everything strictly forbidden by traffic legislation was allowed. The result: spectacular rollovers, trashed cars, burning vehicles and lots and lots of adrenalin!

Each year with a total of 30 drivers, including such celebrities as Joey Kelly, Smudo, Oliver Pocher, Shaggy, Sabrina Setlur, Ralf Möller and Axel Stein, compete against each other in three classes (1,500 cm3, 1,900 cm3 and 3,000 cm3) and three heats.
In the first heat, the “Stock Car Race”, the driver who circles the 170-m track the most times receives the most points. In the 2nd heat (the “Pileup”), the person who performs the most daring crashes in his or her class wins. So, those who can only ram or speed don’t stand a chance of becoming the “Stock Car King” in their respective class. The Master, Stefan Raab, has managed to win this title twice to date. In 2007, the Birthday Boy was gifted nothing by his competitors: he was fairly beaten by Christian Clerici, who was also the last to leave his car in the Rodeo discipline, hence securing a double victory for himself and his team klarmobil.de.

And the cards were reshuffled in the 1,900 cm3 class this year as well: Ben and Christian Clerici, the respective winners in 2005 and 2006, both chose not to compete in this engine class. And Matthias Opdenhövel capitalized on this opportunity and bagged the only victory for the “TV total Team”, which had been so successful in the previous years.

Following victories for Jan Stecker in 2005 and Axel Stein in 2006 in what Stefan Raab describes as the “Kindergarten Class” (up to 1500 cm3), the surprising winner this year was Brösel.

The final heat, the “Rodeo”, decides which team wins. All stock cars still capable of driving, line up at the start. The ramming continues until just one car is left. In 2005, Mathias Lauda, son of racing legend Nicki Lauda secured the team victory, with Joey Kelly winning the title for his team in 2006 and Christian Clerici securing the 2007 victory for his team.

The drivers floored the accelerators and gave it their all in the hope of winning. Some of the celebs actually ended up risking a little too much, with the audience holding their collective breath on a number of occasions. Even presenters Sonya Kraus and Oliver Welke, not normally lost for words, were dumbstruck when, in 2004, Oliver Pocher and, in 2005, Jürgen Milski had to be dragged out of their burning vehicles. Both stars brushed the situation off with their accustomed abandon and were rewarded with the cheers and adoration of the arena’s 50,000 spectators.

And the “TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge” has meanwhile established itself among viewers at home as well: the market share among 14-49 year-olds is up to 24.6 percent*.
