Unser Star für Baku [Our star for Baku]

“Unser Star für Baku” [Our star for Baku]: The television stations Das Erste, ProSieben and the ARD youth radio stations were searching for an artist and song for the world’s biggest music show, which will be hosted by Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on May 26th 2012. Over the course of eight shows, the TV audience decided that Roman Lob gets to represent Germany with his song "Standing Still" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012.

In “Unser Star für Baku”, viewers knew how their favourites are doing in the competition at all times. In each of the eight live shows on ProSieben and Das Erste, the TV audience voted for the candidates in real time. A live ranking of how the votes stood was displayed on the screen throughout the show – viewers could react immediately to the competition rankings by voting via telephone or text message.

Ten candidates competed in each of the first two selection shows (12th and 19th January on ProSieben) and only five advanced to the next round. Two finalists were chosen over the course of five more shows (three selection shows and the semi-final airing on ProSieben and the quarter-final airing on Das Erste). Das Erste broadcasted the final on February 16th 2012 at 8:15 pm, when viewers first had to select the song for Baku and then had to chose between the two finalists Ornella de Santis and Roman Lob.

The winner was Roman Lob (21) with his song "Standing Still".

Presiding over the German ESC preliminary round was president of the jury Thomas D. At his side were Alina Süggeler, singer from the band Frida Gold, and Stefan Raab, producer of the TV show “Unser Star für Baku”, as permanent jury members. Sandra Rieß and Steven Gätjen were the presenters of “Unser Star für Baku”.

President of the jury Thomas D: “We’re looking for someone really special, who brings along something unique. I’m looking for the pearl in the haystack. The one in a million.”
